i watched the rankin-bass animated version of The Hobbit for the first time this weekend, & was really struck by their depiction of Gollum. he was a lot less human, much more froglike, & a great deal creepier because of it than the Gollum in PJ's LOTR.

yea i was gonna say i grew up with this image of gollum so when i watched the movie and learned he was a hobbit(cause i still havent had the plesure of reading the books)i was confused by why they made him look reptilish in the cartoon

you did a great job, but the makers of this film should read more....

i think the depiction of Gollum was the worst part of this movie... everyone who knows his story knows he is a Hobbit and in that movie he just doesn't look like one, not even after spending 500 years in a cave :D

in my version of the book, there's even a picture of him and he looks exactly like a huge frog :D

oh, definitely. i think he's described as 'froglike' in the book, but it's more to do with his sort of slimy, cave-dwelling appearance, & maybe the way he moves & extends his limbs, but he's not meant to look like a strange monster creature, since he is, essentially, a shrivelled & starved sort-of-Hobbit.

so i totally agree - but the design of the character struck me as interesting & i wanted to try drawing him that way. :)
